Qatar-led mediators push for US-Iran deal to avert new strikes: Report
The mediators are pressing Tehran to permit United Nations inspectors to access nuclear facilities damaged in previous strikes, with potential relief from US sanctions being discussed in return, according to reports citing American, Israeli and regional sources.
Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Türkiye are also backing the diplomatic initiative.
US President Donald Trump confirmed that discussions with Iran are proceeding through intermediaries, although he expressed uncertainty about whether the negotiations would produce an agreement.
“We need to finish the job — either through a deal or another way — we will find out if negotiations can succeed,” he said.
The diplomatic push comes amid weeks of warnings from Trump that the United States could carry out extensive military strikes against Iran if efforts to resolve the dispute fail.
In a separate development, US Vice President JD Vance has reportedly sent a letter to Iranian security chief Mohsen Rezaei in an attempt to revive peace negotiations.
The letter was dispatched at Trump's direction as Washington considers whether a diplomatic arrangement could avert another round of American strikes against Iran in the coming weeks, according to reports citing US officials and individuals familiar with the matter.
When asked whether he had instructed Vance to communicate with Iran, Trump said: “No, what it is is that they need help with medical supplies and various things.”
"He asked me what I thought. I said, if you want to do that, that's okay. Basically, it's getting supplies in to help people that are not well," he added.
