Egypt, Qatar Push for Gaza Ceasefire Implementation

(MENAFN) Egypt and Qatar reaffirmed Sunday their joint commitment to advancing the Gaza ceasefire agreement, with top diplomats from both nations convening in Cairo to coordinate efforts on one of the region's most pressing crises.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani met in the Egyptian capital, with the Egyptian Foreign Ministry confirming in a readout that discussions covered "ways to enhance joint cooperation between Egypt and Qatar in various fields, and agreed to continue coordination on various regional issues in a way that achieves common interests and safeguards Arab national security."

The two sides also addressed broader regional developments, emphasizing "the importance of implementing the requirements of the first phase of US President (Donald) Trump's plan (to end the war in Gaza)," according to the ministry.

The high-level meeting coincided with a second consecutive day of multi-party consultations in Cairo, where Palestinian factions and mediators from Egypt, Qatar, and Türkiye resumed talks aimed at pushing forward the next phase of the ceasefire amid what Palestinian sources describe as near-daily Israeli violations of the existing agreement.

The framework in question is Trump's 20-point plan, unveiled in September, which outlines a phased ceasefire structure encompassing the release of Israeli captives, Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, the establishment of a technocratic administration, and deployment of an international stabilization force — alongside a demand for Hamas to disarm. The first phase centered on a ceasefire and prisoner exchange between Israel and Palestinian factions.

Under the anticipated second phase, Israel would be required to conduct further territorial withdrawals, while an international stabilization force would take over security responsibilities, including overseeing the delivery of humanitarian aid and reconstruction materials.

Since launching its military campaign in Gaza in October 2023, Israel has killed more than 73,000 Palestinians and injured over 173,000 — the vast majority women and children — according to Palestinian figures. Despite a ceasefire that came into effect on Oct. 10, 2025, the Gaza Health Ministry reports that Israeli forces have killed at least 947 Palestinians and wounded 2,935 others in continued strikes.
